Michael D. Berman, CMB, is Vice Chair of the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) and President and co-founder of CWCapital in Needham, MA.
Mr. Berman began his career practicing law in the Boston and San Francisco offices of a large national law firm, specializing in debt and equity financing.
In 1985, he became Executive Vice President, Co-Director of Multifamily Loan Originations and a member of the Loan Committee of Continental Wingate Capital Corporation. In 1989-91, he also served as Senior Vice President and General Counsel of an affiliate of Continental Wingate, where he was responsible for managing commercial and multifamily loan workouts, foreclosures and restructurings.
In his current capacity as President of CWCapital, Mr. Berman is responsible for all commercial and multifamily loan production, underwriting, closing and servicing activities and the management of 13 offices nationwide. Under Berman's supervision, loan production has grown from $100 million in 1991 to a level of $3 billion in 2007, while CWCapital's servicing portfolio has grown from zero to $10 billion. As a Board member, he also provides strategic input throughout the CW companies in their vertically integrated business plan, related to their Special Servicing and B Piece portfolio of nearly $200 billion of commercial mortgage backed securities.
Mr. Berman is the Chair of the MBA task force: The Council on Ensuring Mortgage Liquidity: the Future of FannieMae and FreddieMac. He also serves on the Board of the MBA, the MBA Commercial Board of Governors, and the Board of the National MultiHousing Council. He previously Chaired the MBA Strategic Planning Committee and has served on the Fannie Mae DUS Advisory Council, and the MBA Council to Shape Change,.
Mr. Berman holds a B.A. from Harvard University and a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
